چکیده

• Introduce post hoc tests • Review assumptions and issues of power 1. Planned contrasts (a) Contrasts are the building blocks of most statistical tests: ANOVA, regression, MANOVA, discriminant analysis, factor analysis, etc. We will spend a lot of time on contrasts throughout the year. A contrast is a set of weights (a vector) that defines a specific comparison over scores or means. They are used, among other things, to test more focused hypotheses than the overall omnibus test of the ANOVA. For example, if there are four groups, and we want to make a comparison between the first two means, we could apply the following weights: 1,-1, 0, 0. That is, we could create a new statistic using the linear combination of the four meansˆI This contrast is the difference between the means of groups 1 and 2 ignoring groups 3 and 4 (those latter two groups receive weights of 0).

In last week’s lecture we came across an example, from Field (2013), about the drug Viagra, which is a sexual stimulant (used to treat impotence), which is supposed to make men better lovers. Suppose we tested this belief by taking three groups of people and administering one group with a placebo (such as a sugar pill), one group with a low dose of Viagra and one with a high dose. The dependent...

Today's lecture notes cover an introduction to the application of statistical language modeling to information retrieval as motivated by "The Language Modeling Approach to Information Retrieval" by Ponte and Croft from SIGIR '98. Language modeling is the 3rd major paradigm that we will cover in information retrieval. At the time of application, statistical language modeling had been used succes...

Deaf/hard-of-hearing and other postsecondary learners' retention of STEM content with tablet computer-based notes.

Four groups of postsecondary students, 25 who were deaf/hard of hearing (D/HH), 25 with a learning disability, 25 who were English language learners (ELLs), and 25 without an identified disability studied notes that included text and graphical information based on a physics or a marine biology lecture. The latter 3 groups were normally hearing. All groups had higher scores on post- than on pret...
